Requirements To Become Pediatrician

Being a doctor is not an easy and laid-back profession. The journey of becoming one is not easy, either. The journey takes a long time and a lot of patience, determination and dedication. There are many fields in medicine that a person can choose from. And one of these is the field of pediatrics. So, how does one become a pediatrician What are the steps in becoming one

For those who are interested in the field of pediatrics, one has to finish successfully all the necessary requirements. Four (4) years of college; Four (4) or more years in medical school; One (1) year of internship; Must be able to pass the National Medical Board Examinations; and last but not the least, another Three (3) years of residency training.

Anyone who is interested in becoming a pediatrician in the future should plan to enroll in pre-medical courses in college. These pre-medical courses are the following: One (1) year of Freshman Chemistry including laboratory courses; One (1) year of Organic Chemistry including laboratory courses; One (1) year of Biology including laboratory courses; One (1) year of Physics along with laboratory courses; One (1) year of English; One (1) year of Calculus or other advanced Math Classes and this includes Statistics.

Entrance to medical schools is not easy. A person needs to pass the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). The MCAT is divided into 4 categories: Physical Sciences (PS); Verbal Reasoning (VR); Writing Sample (WR); Biological Sciences (BS). Upon admission to medical school, the first two years are mostly theoretical. While the two remaining years involve hospital and clinical rotations. One (1) year of internship comes next after four (4) years of pre-medical undergraduate course and four (4) years of medical school. The internship program is a very rigorous training. After a year of internship, comes the time for the National Medical Board Examinations.

Those who have successfully passed the National Medical Board Examinations and have earned their medical degrees can start on their residency trainings. Pediatric residency trainings usually take three (3) years to complete. After the residency training, a pediatrician has the choice to go for fellowship training. The number of years to complete a fellowship training depends on what kind of sub-specialty a pediatrician likes to pursue.

After more than 10 years of continuous education and training, it is time to create a well-made resume that is short but very clear in details.  Work experience should be put in first, as this is the first thing than an employer looks for. This should be written starting from the latest up to the oldest job. It is also wise for new pediatricians to include the training courses attended that is relevant to the position being applied for. Educational background should be included and any organization that a pediatrician is a member. This can broaden the chance of catching the employer’s attention and boosting the chance of getting hired for the job.
